After Jesus was baptized and filled with the Holy Spirit, He was led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit being tempted by the enemy for 40 days. He ate nothing and after that was very hungry.
The devil said: "If you are the Son of God, command there stone to become bread" Luke 4.
Let's look at this.
If is like a challenge and an accusation to temp one to proof that you are who you say you are. Reacting on doubt rather than knowledge.
In the statement the enemy makes, he knows who He is as he is indirectly already confirming it.
Jesus was hungry after 40 days of no food and the enemy exploit this knowledge in tempting Him to 'flex' His power and to temp Him into doing something that is not of God which would have been disobedient in doing a miracle to enrich Himself and not others. Enrichment of self is pride and ego driven.
Furthermore fasting makes one hungry not only for food but also for the word of God.
Jesus answered: "It is written: man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God"
It is written - He used the Word for a weapon as it it powerful. We too should do this.
Man shall not live by bread alone - this refers to physical food.
But by every word of God - The word of God holds immense power to sustain us and our souls as we trust in it just as we place trust in food to sustain our bodies. We need to ingest the word of the Lord and live by it. Just as most often eat 3 time daily to sustain our bodies, we need the word of the Lord daily to sustain our souls.
The next part is the words 'live by' not just for comfort but a way of life. Allow our worldly ways of the flesh to be changed and transformed ,becoming a living testimony of His goodness and a living breath gospel, not to just read it.
